Ironwoman Wednesday: Training Reflections

Welcome back to Ironwoman Wednesday with Jamie at From Couch to Ironwoman, Michelle at IronwomanStrong and me! We’re all training for Ironman Louisville, and are coming together every Wednesday to share our journeys and talk triathlon with all you other half and full Ironmen and women!

We are just 11 days away from race day! Isn’t that amazing?!

Today we celebrate completing all those months of training with some Ironman Training Reflections. I really can’t believe our journey to our first Ironman is coming to an end. The training has been done, now all we’re doing is maintenance, self-care, mental prep and race planning. A little bit of anxiety, a little bit of stress and a whole lot of excitement. I feel so ready and I can’t wait!

So what reflections do I have to offer?

Here it is: the good, the bad and the ugly!

The Good:

  • The race will be epic, but it really is the journey that matters most! Training was hard, there were good days and bad days, but I truly enjoyed every second and it is so important to make the most of it and take time to celebrate each accomplishment and milestone.

  • Pablo and I stuck not just to our training plan, but we also focused on nutrition, recovery, and self-care and we’ve managed to remain injury free through one of the hardest workout seasons we’ve ever done. Having a solid plan is crucial! But so is being flexible with that plan. Missing a workout is okay, having a bad workout is ok, taking that extra nap…definitely okay!
  • Ironman training = personal growth.  You just can’t embark on this journey and not grow as a person. Time management, discipline, strength, endurance, perseverance. You learn it all. I am very proud of the person I am today and I am super comfortable in my own skin, which is a wonderful feeling!

Person We Become

  • Overcoming your fears and battling your demons and winning is amazing! Ironman training teaches you that you really can achieve anything you set your mind to and that is something I plan on carrying with me and applying to all aspects of my life.

Amazing how much you can

The Bad:

  • You’re in the best shape of your life, yet you hesitate to put on a bathing suit, short skirt or sleeveless top, because you have the most hideous tan lines ever!
  • You’ll call a 40-mile bike ride an easy day, yet you refuse to walk up escalators.
    Seriously, it’s just not going to happen.
  • You’re the fittest and most active you’ll ever be, yet you feel super lazy when you skip a workout or cut a workout short. It’s all so relative isn’t it?
  • You will eat all day and always be hungry!! Your grocery bill will be ridiculous. How old are your kids, m’am? Kids? You talking to me? No, no kids here, just 2 very hungry triathletes.
  • You finally get to eat all the calories you could ever want, but  then you get tired of eating! Ok, maybe that’s just me, but some days I just get tired of chewing! Thank goodness for my Vitamix and yummy smoothies.

The Ugly:

  • Saddle sores are very, very real and I wish someone would have just told me about them before we started training so I could be better prepared. A good saddle and comfy bike short are key, but recognize everyone is different. Pablo uses bike shorts and has yet to find a saddle he loves. I love my Adamo Road saddle and I can ride 112 miles in tri shorts.Everyone is different, but one thing probably works for all of us: Chamois Butt’r. Invest in it NOW! It’s a life saver for your booty and privates. Oh, and get out of those shorts as soon as you can after your workout. I’m gonna avoid going into details, but basically bacteria love warm sweaty bike shorts.

  • Chafing is also very real. I’m talking ANYWHERE skin can rub (think thighs, arms to torso, nipples) and anywhere clothing can rub, heart rate monitor strap, sports bra straps, waistbands and more. Lucky for me, or maybe unlucky for me, I had a “fun” experience with chafing during one of my half marathons, so Body Glide and I have been best friends for many years.
  • Your house will smell, you will smell, you will have endless amounts of laundry, and most of it will smell! Embrace the stinkiness and you might just survive.
  • Snot, pee, blisters, losing toenails…wanna be an Ironman? You better be okay dealing with all of that stuff, because there’s just no way around it (and if you’re one of those lucky people that never gets blisters or black and blue toenails, don’t talk to me, you suck!)

  1. Not long now! Did you see John Boehl’s forecast for 8/24? He has done Ironman every year it’s been in Louisville, he works for WAVE3 station there, and he is predicting 99 degrees on race day! Yowza, going to be a memorable last August IMLOU! Excited to be the last class of August, and go out in a bang, and share that with all you all!

    • I know!! I hope it’s just a little cooler than 99, but whatever it is I’m gonna enjoy every second! Can’t believe it’s just 1.5 weeks away!
