I always wonder what gear other runners and triathletes use. While brand and gear choices are pretty personal, I think it’s always nice to know what others are using, so that you can get some guidance when making your own gear choices. It’s also nice to have a checklist, especially if you’re just getting started!
Here’s a list of all my current gear. It’s a work in progress and I’ll be adding brands and reviews over the next few weeks. If you’re a new triathlete, don’t worry about getting all of it at once. The basics should be enough to get you through a sprint and maybe even an olympic distance race. As you get more serious about racing, you can keep adding to your gear collection!
Swim
- Goggles: I’ve been testing a bunch of different brands. So far one of my favorites is Zogg’s, especially their tinted goggles for open water swimmming.
- Swim cap: I use a regular Speedo cap, but I’ve been considering upgrading to something that does a little less damage to my hair.
- Bathing Suit: I recently upgraded to an Arena suit and so far I love it!
- Swim watch: I used to use a Swimsense, but recently upgraded to a Garmin 910XT since I can use that for the swim, bike and run
- Props: Paddles, fins, buoy. I also use a kick board, but I just borrow that from the pool
Bike
Bike: QR Dulce Triathlon that I absolutely love! She has an Adamo seat, which is super comfy, adjustable aero bars and looks beautiful! (before that I was on a Trek Road Bike with profile design aero bars).
- Helmet
- Cycling shoes
- Hydration: Profile Design Areo bottle and a couple of water bottle cages for additional hydration.
- Storage: XLab wing that carries my toolkit and CO2 cartridges and 2 bento boxes for all the food I’ll need on my 4+ hour bike
- Sunglasses
- Technology: I used to have a CatEye, now I use the Garmin 910XT watch which came with cadence and speed sensors and a heart rate monitor.
Run
- Socks: Feetures! are by far my favorite brand.
- Running shoes: I have a shoe problem…I have use Mizuno, Asics, Saucony and Skora and I love them all. The most important thing is to make sure you are in the right fit.
- Technology: I used to use my phone with the Nike+ Running App or Pearsports, but now I mostly use the Garming 910XT with the heart rate monitor.
- Road ID: This is a must have! It’s a quick way for someone to access your information in case of an emergency, i.e. you pass out or get hit by a car.
- Hydrapak: I love my Avila! It’s light, carries loads of water and is very comfortable to use.

I’ve recently been using silicone swim caps…well worth the extra dollar or 2. Better for your hair and easier to get on and off. I order my swimsuits from swimoutlet.com and use th grab bag deals for TYR. You get to select the size and they just send you a random suit (the specific grab bag you select well denote diamond back vs other styles). Sometimes I end up in bright pink suits and other times black/green, you just never know! They’re good suits and a good deal if you don’t care about design!
Thanks for the tips Holli! Will totally check out the TYR grab bag.
